“Nanbu Tenkoku” is an engraving technique that looks like it is printed on stone with motifs such as landscapes and people by driving dots into the stone. By adjusting the density and strength of the chisel strike, the details are clearly expressed and the shadows are beautifully finished like a black-and-white photograph.
My grandfather, who was a stonemason, inherited the tools when I became a stonemason and thought, “Can I make something using these tools ? ” That’s when I came across this technique. While there were no craftsmen in Japan, I started learning this technique on my own and spend more than ten years mastering it independently.
